Open since the late ‘90’s, Book Buyers moved from their old Plaza-Midwood location to their current spot three and a half years ago. Maybe you used to visit them and thought they disappeared or closed permanently like many other businesses did during Covid. They just moved to the Eastway Crossing Shopping Center right next door to Bart’s Mart. The layout is almost identical to the OG location. Rows lined with handmade pine bookshelves that go all the way to the ceiling, a children’s section in the back, and a beautiful selection of vegan and natural goods are still present. Virginia, Lee, and Richard can still be seen shuffling around putting out new arrivals of great quality pre-loved books and tiding up the inventory. There’s no pushy salesman following you around, there’s no forced conversations, and there’s no urgency to leave, even if you don’t buy anything. There’s just a welcomed escape from the hustle and bustle of the outside world and a relaxing place to simply unwind.
Whether you are looking for sheet music, records, CDs, cookbooks, or nonfiction, you will find something you want (or need) at Book Buyers. My teenagers and I have been going there since they were babies and we still go up there and buy dozens of books a year. And the three resident cats are still serving up “main character energy” as they lounge around a give out a “hey” (meow) to passerbys. It is a whole vibe.
My favourite part of the store is The Greener Apple section wherein Lee has curated an area to provide you with healthier options for your home, your pets, and your body. I use their air fresheners, as they are safe around my birds and cats, and their laundry detergent, as it is safe to use on the bedding for my guinea pigs and rabbits. Go check it out yourself as it is high time to start making smarter decisions about the products you use daily as a consumer. Also be shure to check their website and socials for their book club information, their calendar of poetry and fiction readings with open mics, and their Friday book quizzes.
