Good Things for Good People
an interview with Joey Hewell & Scott Lindsley
by: the Clown
Charlotte has rich mix of people that make the city great. Attend an event, walk around any neighborhood, or complete some errands here and you encounter some of the most talented, passionate, and enthralling people in the world. If you have had the fortune to bump into Joey Hewell and Scott Lindsley, AKA The Linwells, at any of their flawless events, at The Company Store in NoDa, at a Carolina Panthers Game, or just out and about, you already know that you met two of Charlotte’s best.
Recently, Joey and Scott showed up on a brand new Netflix game show called What’s In The Box hosted by Neil Patrick Harris. They had the audacity and cleverness to win the thing and The Clown wanted to catch up with the couple on their newest success.

Clown: Did either of you ever think you would end up on a game show?
Joey & Scott: No, it wasn’t on our radar at all. Hadn’t really ever thought about it, plus most of the game shows that we watch have trivia that is way out of our league.
C: How did this come about? Were you recruited?
J & S: We know a casting agent in L.A. (Scott: someone that I’ve been in touch with in the past about a real estate show she’d been casting) that contacted us about the opportunity. We’ve kept in touch over the years and when this came up, and needed teams or duos, she got in touch.
C: What are the best parts of this adventure so far?
J & S: It was filmed in London, so the trip there was great. We had two days on our own before it started to enjoy the city.
C: Will you be likely to try other game shows now that you have done this?
J & S: If the opportunity came up, we’d certainly be up for it.
C: You two have broken lots of barriers. What would be the next dream barrier to break?
J & S: Oh man, not sure what they would be. Other than fighting for, and gaining, marriage equality, I’m not sure what else we’d be qualified for. In terms of fighting for human rights, especially in our current situation in this country, we are always going to be supporting and fighting for those in need. These sort of fights, the way we’ve been involved in the past, have always been sort of “in the moment” participation. Example: we didn’t plan on our courthouse vigil a decade or so ago when marriage equality was finally making its way through the courts, and to North Carolina, but when it became obvious it was here we jumped right in. I guess I’d say we are less long-haul planners, but always ready to get involved as times or actions call for it.
C: You always give back to the community. What are your latest projects and where can people get details or volunteer?
J & S: At the moment we aren’t working on anything. Part of what the prizes from winning this entails will keep us traveling in and out of the country for much of the next year, so it’s a bit difficult to dedicate much time to anything else, and after last year and the hurricane it’s a welcome respite. Our travel begins mid-February so getting everything ready for that has been our priority for the past few weeks.
C: What would be your message to the next hopefuls?
J & S: If you’re interested in game shows, or reality TV in general, look up various casting agencies on social media, most of them post application opportunities frequently. For small shows and for the big ones as well. Most reality TV (and this really was reality TV wrapped around a game-show) is open cast to the public, you just have to know where to look.
C: How was NPH? Super cool, right?
J & S: He really was. Extremely down to earth and friendly. We all spent a lot of time in the studio and on stage and he was chatty and friendly with all of us the whole time.
