Dear Clown,
My friends and I have been together since college and we make a point to do something together every week. Some of the women in our group seem to be upset with me lately. If they are walking to their car in a group, I stay put, but if one is leaving alone, I always walk them to their car. The last time I did this, I was told that it started a rumor among them that I was hitting on the solo ones. I assured them that my concern was only for their safety, but there is still some coldness there. How can I fix that?
Sincerely,
The Guardian

Dear Guardian,
The next time all of you are out, address it to the group. Safety is always warranted when you are out anywhere, and your presence is a good deterrent. If it were me, I would add that after knowing them for so long, there is no possible way I could stand to date them.
Stay vigil,
The Clown

Dear Clown,
My mother is dating an ex-girlfriend’s father. They met at random and my mother had never met my ex-girlfriend until lately. Now I am dreading that family events will include everyone. That relationship ended badly with her cheating and stealing from me. How do I even approach handling this?
Sincerely,
Unwanted Past

Dear Unwanted Past,
Prioritize mom’s happiness. Have an honest conversation about what happened in the past and begin to strategize together on how to handle anything that may be awkward. After some time, you may find that this has less impact than you imagine. That is the usual case for the things we dread the most.
Breathe,
The Clown

Dear Clown,
I have had several people turn against me lately. Some of these people have been friends since high school and some have even been family. Their problem with me is that I don’t tolerate racism, xenophobia, and some of the terrible things that I see happening lately. I work against hate daily and have several causes where I contribute or volunteer. I also call people out when they are racist or hateful. It tears at my heart that people have turned against me. Is there any remedy to that?
Sincerely,
Harmonious

Dear Harmonious,
The adage says that if you have enemies, it means you stood for something. Compromising on an ideal like the elimination of fear and hatred to be accepted by anyone else, including family members, would be wrong. The current rejection may tear at your heart, but letting go of this ideal would tear up your soul.
Live honestly,
The Clown

Things I should not have to tell you
In this edition, I have one simple thing for all of you.
The Rogers Rule: If Fred Rogers (Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood) or Steve Rogers (Captain America) would NOT do a thing or say a thing, then you probably should not either.
